Tribal Colleges and Universities (large map)

AIHEC has grown to 37 Tribal Colleges and Universities with more than 80 sites in the United States. Well over half of the 573 federally recognized tribes are represented at TCUs with American Indian students from 29 states, including 15 states that do not have their own TCU. Each of these institutions was created and chartered by its own tribal government for a specific purpose: to provide higher education opportunities to American Indians through programs that are locally and culturally based, holistic, and supportive. All TCUs offer associate degree programs; 22 offer baccalaureate programs; 9 offer master’s degree programs; one offers a doctorate program.

TCUs have become increasingly important to educational opportunity for American Indian students and are unique institutions that combine personal attention with cultural relevance to encourage American Indians—especially those living on reservations—to overcome the barriers they face to higher education. TCUs provide access to quality, low-cost higher education. The average annual tuition of $3,572.10 makes a TCU education the most affordable in the nation. TCUs are a proven and solid investment: for every $1 invested in TCUs, the return is at least $5.20 annually, according to an independent study.
