Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools

Diabetes is almost three times more common in the American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) population than in the general population. Once considered an adult disease, type 2 diabetes is being diagnosed more and more often in AI/AN children, and the risk for type 2 diabetes is increasing in young people in all U.S. populations. Many people are unaware that the onset of diabetes can often be prevented or delayed. In 2001, eight TCUs began working with NIH and CDC to develop the “Diabetes in Tribal Schools” (DETS) curriculum to increase AI/AN students understanding of health, diabetes, and maintaining life in balance; increase their understanding and application of scientific and community knowledge; and increase interest in science and health professions among AI/AN youth. We urge you to visit the DETS Web site and adopt this innovative and life-changing curriculum in your schools.
